The Single Girl’s Guide To Valentine’s Day Abroad: My Plan In New Zealand

Valentine’s Day got you down? Feeling sad about SAD (Singles Awareness Day)? Need I remind you that if you’re in New Zealand, you are in the ADVENTURE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD?! And if you’re not in New Zealand, don’t fret. These tips will help any single person on Valentine’s Day have a sweet as time to get through the blues and get back in the game!

    1. Treat Yo’ Self

If Valentine’s Day is all about your significant other, being single means you should take the day to take care of yourself! New Zealand has tons of hot springs, like the Onsen Hot Pools in Queenstown, and other self-indulging attractions. Take an herbal soak and let all your troubles melt away. Or sip on a freshly brewed cup of coffee while reading your favorite book.

    2. Don’t Whine, Drink Some Wine

Get a bunch of your single friends together and go out for a wine tasting party! Waiheke Island, and New Zealand in general, is famous for its vineyards and wineries. Forget about roses, these are the only reds and whites you’ll need.

    3. GLOW UP

Nothing ruins a good Valentine’s Day more than feeling inadequate. Lucky for you, New Zealand’s got the perfect fix with their healthy lifestyle culture providing you with a “runner’s high” and a killer bod. Exercise is the most amazing natural stimulant, and with options like yoga, standup paddle boarding, and everything in between, you will be tasting those sweet endorphins all day long.

    4. Get Off Social Media, Get Outside

Instagram and Facebook are sure to be cluttered with long winded love posts. Do yourself the favor of staying offline for the day and keeping your mind focused on more important and relevant things like your great group of friends and all of the unexplored places you want to visit.

    5. Travel Bug > Love Bug

You don’t need a significant other to make incredible memories abroad. Missing the feeling of getting butterflies from talking to someone you like? Get the same feeling times a thousand by taking advantage of bungee jumping or skydiving. The Nevis River hosts New Zealand’s biggest bungee jump, and if that’s not for you, they also offer the World’s Biggest Swing! Don’t want to splurge? Take the free option and go for a hike or a nice stroll along the beautiful black sand beaches.

    6. Avoid the Crowds, Hang with Gal Pals

It can be overwhelming going out and seeing all the couples together on V-Day, and if that’s the case for you, get together with some close friends and stay in. A girl’s night in is both fun and empowering. You can bake, cook, watch movies, and do anything else you want in the comfort of your own home. You can’t go wrong with some more wine and cheese, or if you’ve got a bit of a sweet tooth, Pavlova is the perfect dessert for you!

    7. Have Fun

At the end of the day, just make the best of it. Because while February 14th is just another day, being abroad is an unforgettable experience of a lifetime. You’ll forget about Valentine’s Day by the next holiday, but you will never forget the adventures you have and the memories you make.
