4 Reasons To Do An Erasmus Exchange Program
‘Student exchange’ are two magical words that enchant every student at least one time in their life. It is something students dream of completing and, actually, this isn’t baseless. However, funnily enough, I never thought it really is possible. And when it happened, it was something so hard for me to believe in and at the same time – something I wanted to prolong forever. Let me explain why Erasmus is something everyone should try!
Here, I assume that all of you know what Erasmus actually is. But if not, follow this link.
Gain new experience.
So, reason number one is priceless luggage of experience. You will experience living in a new country, and in doing so increase your level of independence and literally leave your comfort zone (which, actually, could be a worthy separate reason number two in terms of its value). Moreover, you will understand what it’s like to be a local in this or that country. This something you would have never have been able to get through travelling only. That’s why you should rush to your university’s International Office right now!
Secondly, you will not only gain life experience, but some unique knowledge as well. Every person has their own view on an issue – that is why new professors (and maybe even new studying techniques) will push you forward in terms of your skills and knowledge.
Make new friends.
Thirdly, moving to a new country means finding yourself in a place where there is no one you know. Sounds a bit frightening, right? Well, it actually isn’t as scary as you might think, because this will push you to making dozens of new amazing friendships from all over the world. Together, you will experience one of the best moments of your lives, travel to different places and just have fun. Who knows, maybe one of them will be your future partner! Have you heard that 27% of Erasmus students met their future long-term partners during their semester abroad? Food for thought!
Travel the world.
Reason number four is something I know for sure from my own experience. Erasmus means travelling and seeing lots of cool places. During my stay in Germany, I managed to visit five different countries and fully explore Germany. I also know a lot of other students who tried to make the most of their exchange semester in Europe as they were from Asia, as it was far too expensive for them to travel to the European countries for leisure. Staying in the heart of Europe for half a year gave them an opportunity to explore lots of other countries that were nearby to the country they were studying in, and they didn’t dare to miss it.
Improve your language skills.
Are you already persuaded enough to rush to your university’s International Office right now and search for the perfect university for your Erasmus? Well, if not, then I will continue: so here comes reason number five. Although this reason may seem to be obvious, it is nevertheless strong and validating reason why so many students undertake Erasmus: a semester abroad will help you to improve your language skills.
Moreover, most likely you will improve in at least two languages. The most likely of which is the language spoken in the country of your Erasmus. In my case, it was German. Before my semester I could hardly speak a word of it but, after a few months, I had already obtained the basic speaking skills that were needed for a life there. Secondly (and surprisingly) is the English language. Often, Erasmus students are not just from different countries, but from different continents. Yet, despite this, the English language is prevalent in most European countries due to its popularity; so, the chances are that you will find English will be the one language everyone communicates with to help each other when their native tongue fails.
Live another lifestyle.
Can I say sixthly? Well, I will. And here I would like to refer you to one of ESN (Erasmus Student Network) quotes, which says: “Exchange is not a year in your life. It is a life in one year.” I fully agree with this statement as my semester in Germany is still remembered as one of the most affirming periods in my life, because of how I got the chance to live another lifestyle.
So, are you ready to try Erasmus? Don’t even think that it is too difficult or that it is not for you. ‘Cause this is not true! Every one of us can apply for a semester (or two!) abroad and I hope I have persuaded you of the excellence of such a decision.
