Insurance WaiverStep-by-Step Guide
Ready to move forward with medical insurance outside of your college or university’s plan?
Don’t forget! You’ll likely need to fill out an insurance waiver request with your school. These waivers will have to be approved before you begin classes, so make sure all of your materials are ready to go!
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help make your waiver process simple, easy, and successful.
STEP 1: KNOW YOUR REQUIREMENTS
Remember, even if you’re choosing your own independent plan, you’ll still need to meet your school’s minimum insurance requirements. Make note of all the things your insurance will have to cover according to your school.
Plus, be sure to find out when your insurance waiver will have to be in. Some schools require you to turn in your waiver form a month before classes even start—so start early and don’t miss your window!
STEP 2: DOWNLOAD YOUR WAIVER FORM
Once you’ve figured out what standards your insurance will be required to meet, download the waiver form through your school’s website.
This will give you all the specifics on what you’ll need to provide your school in order to be approved. While every waiver form is different, it’s safe to assume you’ll need to provide the following:
* Personal information, including full name, date of birth, and pre-existing medical conditions
* Insurance company name, policy number, and specific dates your insurance will be activated
* A section for your insurance company to complete, including a signature and date
STEP 3: FOLLOW-UP, AND APPEAL IF NECESSARY
After you turn in your waiver form, you’ll likely hear back quickly on your school’s decision. However, always remember that you can follow-up during or after the process is complete with questions or concerns about your application.
Additionally, even if your application is turned down, many schools have an appeals process. If information about appeals isn’t available online, reach out to your international student office and find out what your next steps are.
STEP 4: RENEW YOUR WAIVER REQUEST
Once you’re approved, you can just relax for the rest of your time in America, right? WRONG!
Most schools will require you to renew your waiver request yearly, or sometimes even each semester. Be sure to make note of when you’ll have to check back in and re-apply for your insurance waiver, if you choose to continue with your independent plan.
