10 Questions Everyone Asks Americans Studying Abroad

Everyone in the world views America under a microscope – especially right now since everything that’s going on in American is a little um… funky. Studying in New Zealand as an American, it is a daily occurrence for someone to approach me in whatever coffee shop I’m studying at and ask, “are you from America?” I used to find this quite flattering at first, but now I am realizing it’s because they want to know what the HECK is going on with our country right now. Here are 10 common questions Americans are asked when studying abroad.

1. Why are you guys letting Trump run for President?

Dude, this was not my idea. I am a single human from America. Please do not put the accountability of my country in my hands because I don’t know what to do about it either.

2. Who are you voting for?

It’s a secret!

3. Why are you all so obsessed with the Kardashians?

Why do you all think we are obsessed with the Kardashians? :/

4. Oh, where’s (insert name of any other state besides California, New York, or Texas) at?

*tries to draw map of America and point to where your state is* Lol at my boyfriend who still thinks Indiana is just a shorter name for Indianapolis.

5. Why did you choose to come here?

Because your country is the bomb, obviously!

6. You sound like all the people on TV!

People watch all of our media and news over in New Zealand, so they keep up with most of our media quite closely. Since hardly that many Americans ever venture over to New Zealand, they don’t hear American accents very much in person.

7. Why are you all shooting each other over there?

Great question. I never really understood there was so much violence in America until I was in a country where there is maybe an average of 2 murders a year countrywide.

8. Why are you all so expressive?

Americans are known for being overly outgoing and open in comparison to most other countries where it is more of a laidback culture. I’m still trying to convince some people here in New Zealand that I’m not crazy, I’m just American.

9. Is school in The States really like how it is on television?

Haha no, I wish it was like Gossip Girl because it’s like they never actually had class or homework and all got into Ivy league schools…

10. How long are you here for?

Potentially/hopefully/fingers crossed for forever.
